The Rocket
Its not so easy to make an upbeat film in Laos, one of the poorest countries in the world which still hasnt recovered from the Vietnam war, but documentary filmmaker Kim Mordaunt has pulled it off. Ahlo is a surviving twin, and therefore cursed, destined to bring bad luck to his village, according to Laotian superstition. Sure enough, the village is erased to make way for a dam. Driven from their home, Ahlo and his family hop onto a cart full of unexploded bombs left over from the war. In the course of their travels, Ahlo stumbles upon a rocket-building contest. In hopes of proving that his reputation is unfounded, he enters it. Mordaunt who made a film about the danger of unexploded ordnance in Laos, guides this story with a clear, unsentimental eye. The Rocket won the Crystal Bear at this years Berlin Film Festival, and Best Narrative Feature at the Tribeca Film Festival.
