The Invisible Woman
In 1857, Charles Dickens fell in love with a 17 year-old actress named Nelly Ternan. This was no short lived affair; it lasted 13 years, in the course of which he publicly rejected his wife. At the time, Dickens was probably the most famous man in England. Then, as now, society relished celebrities, scandal, and gossip, giving this story a contemporary flavor, but it was Victorian England, and the affair was hushed up. Ralph Fiennes, who turns in a powerful performance as the entitled, selfish writer, also directed, and has given us a lush period piece that fans of costume dramas will love. Felicity Jones is the actress, and Kristin Scott Thomas her mother. Played the Toronto Film Festival.
