How I Live Now
Based on an award-winning young adult novel, How I Live Now is a sort of British version of The Hunger Games. A tough, punked-out 15 year-old American girl is sent to live with cousins in the remote English countryside when World War III breaks out. Its a coming of age story crossed with a violent, dystopian vision of the future, somewhat like Elysium. Although theres plenty of action, and occasional brutality, its more of a serious character study than The Hunger Games, and boasts of a luminous performance by Saoirse Ronin. Directed by Kevin Macdonald, one of Britains most gifted directors, who gave us State of Play and The Last King of Scotland, and rarely disappoints. Played the Toronto Film Festival.
