The signature power of The Stray Birds' sound lies in outstanding songwriting that soars in three-part harmony. No matter where they're playing, from NPR's Mountain Stage to tiny clubs, their performances speak to an uncompromising reverence for songs--and this reverence has struck a nerve with reviewers, music loving fans, and radio listeners everywhere. Without doubt, the Stray Birds are one of the most talked about bands in folkdom right now. They play Americana--a blend of foot-stomping bluegrass, heartbreaking country, timeless gospel, and tender poetic ballads. Bassist Charles Muench studied music at university, but found his richest education in bluegrass barn jams at a nearby farm. Vocalist Maya De Vitry spent a year and a half at Berklee College of Music studying with Mark Simos, Darol Anger, and John McGann and is now receiving national recognition for her songwriting. Guitarist Oliver Craven turned down several college football scholarships, picked up the mandolin and guitar, and headed to Philadelphia to attend Temple University and write songs.
