In the early 1990s, Nirvana changed the music world with the overwhelming success of their breakthrough album Nevermind, which brought punk rock to the masses. They became widely known for their loud, brash and chaotic live shows, complete with guitar smashing and general destruction. In late 1993, the band took an artistic risk by performing on MTVs Unplugged, playing stripped down acoustic versions of their popular songs, along with numerous covers from artists they admired. They added an orchestral element by implementing extra guitars and cello, which highlighted the raw beauty of the songs. Following Kurt Cobains death in 1994, the album was released to mourning fans worldwide. It was regarded as more of a funeral procession for a legendary artist instead of a transition to the folk-rock style Cobain was interested in musically exploring. Now over 25 years later, the album is viewed as a performance that transcends genres, almost the swan song of a generation. NIVRANA recreates the nuanced sound of the famous Unplugged album, and the intimate atmosphere of the Bryant Lake Bowl Theatre is the ideal venue for such a performance.
