The Lady Scribblers
Women playwrights seize the stage! In the seventeenth century. And now.
Those Women Productions presents a stage reading of The Lady Scribblers, a new play by Michaela Goldhaber, directed by Tracy Ward.
Cast includes: Emma Curtin, Kieron Edwards, Valerie Fachman, Michael Houston, Oluchi Nwokocha, Susan Shay, Dave Sikula, Emily Stone, and J.J. Van Name.
Synopsis London 1689. A fight breaks out at the funeral of Aphra Behn, the first woman to earn her living as a playwright. Mary Pix, who writes comedies in her kitchen while waiting for her bread to rise, wants to get her plays on the stage, but Christopher Rich, who runs the only royally sanctioned theatre in London, sneers at her and refuses to allow any more plays by women. Playwright Goldhaber spent over twenty years of researching and directing the work of women playwrights of the Restoration, and in this play, she borrows their style to tell their story in a delightful farce.
The Lady Scribblers will receive its world premiere production in spring 2020, a co-production of Those Women Productions and The Custom Made Theatre Company and a featured event in the inaugural Bay Area Women's Theatre Festival. Join us in Oakland on November 23 and become part of the process of bringing this new play to the stage.
