Apocalypse Later: Harold Camping vs The End of the World
Harold Camping ratcheted up expectations for earth's total destruction. Even though most Christians believe these are the Last Days, date-setting is taboo. But, it's a fine line. Many evangelists will go so far as to say that 'ours is the last generation.' And Americans are listening. An incredible 40% of Americans believe Jesus will return by 2050, and fully 79% expect a return someday. For most Americans, these are the Last Days. That's fertile ground for a doomsday proclamation. For Harold, 'Everything we teach has to be as biblical as possible.' But what that means depends entirely on the one who has ears to hear. Because for Camping and the listeners to his Open Forum radio show, the time of the end is hidden in the Bible, something God has encoded and can be unlocked. Matthew's Gospel records Jesus words, 'No man knows the day or the hour, not the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but my Father only.' Jesus may have been against date-setting, but He was not against predicting the 30-year window. For Jesus, His was the Last Generation as He states clearly in Mark 9.1: 'Some of you standing here will not taste death before you see the Kingdom of God has come with power.' Apocalypse Later investigates the origins for today's End Times excitement, featuring commentary from scholar legend John Collins (Yale Divinity), 2-time Jon Steward guest Bart Ehrman (UNC), Dead Sea Scrolls expert Loren Stuckenbruck (Princeton Seminary), and Peter Lillback (President of Westminster Seminary).
