An evening of solo performances by Laryssa Husiak, Mitsu Salmon, and Christine Shallenberg
Triple Heartbeat is an evening of three solo interdisciplinary performance works exploring themes of nature, ritual, and family. The works blend storytelling, dance, text, and voice and are shared as an exchange between Chicago and Minneapolis. The three artists - Laryssa Husiak, Christine Shallenberg, and Mitsu Salmon - have known each other for nearly half their lives. Triple Heartbeat is their first shared performance.
Trance in Botany is a performative lecture by Mitsu Salmon about the work of her great-grandfather, Ryozo Kanehira. He was a well-known botanist from Japan, who did extensive work in Taiwan during the Japanese occupation. The piece plays with the form of the lecture with fracture narrative, voice, and movement. The piece investigates the study of trees as connected to family, the body, and the complexities of imperialism.
Songs of Private, Everyday Life is an exploration of traditional Ukrainian folk songs, sung in a contemporary context. Husiak, who is of Ukrainian descent, reflects on the lyrics of these songs and harmonizes with recordings of Ukrainian elders in an effort to connect the past to present and find shared meaning today.
Re-wind Cycle is a performance solo of energetic expressions as they are carried by the air. Created and performed by Chicago-based artist Christine Shallenberg, Re-wind Cycle describes a current of breath using original songs, a copper pipe, and an infinity symbol pathway washed onto the floor. With each inhale and exhale, the cycle repeats. Wind and weather patterns, flight, and the search for a voice all dance together in this playful ritual of elements embodied.
Artist Bios
Mitsu Salmon creates performance and visual works that fuse multiple disciplines. Her current project investigates botany, familial histories, colonization, and archives. Salmon received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2014 and her undergrad degree from NYU. She has presented work at places such as the Chicago Cultural Center, Julius Caesar, Comfort Station and internationally at Hebbel Am Uffer in Berlin, Made Budhiana Gallery in Bali and Urbanguild in Kyoto, Japan. She has participated in artist residencies at Taipei Artist Village, Villa Pandan Harum in Bali, High Concept Lab, Links Hall, the Chicago Cultural Center and Oxbow. She was awarded best collaborative multi-disciplinary performance by Newcity in 2015, DCASE IAP, and a touring grant through Midwest Nexus in 2018.
Laryssa Husiak is a Minneapolis-based playwright and performing artist with roots in New York City. Most recently, she premiered her solo, Feet on the Ground at the Red Eye Theater as part of the Isolated Acts Program. Her original play She Is King premiered at Incubator Arts Project in New York, 2014, and toured to Boom Arts in Portland, Oregon. In 2016, Laryssa was awarded a Forecast Public Art grant for her interactive performance project Free Speech Karaoke. Other grants: Iowa Arts Council, Art Matters, Yip Harburg Foundation. Fellowships: MacDowell Colony, Yaddo. She was a finalist for the 2014 Leslie Scalapino Award for her play The Forgettable Saga of Donna Wanna. Laryssa is a member of the Obie Award-winning theater company Two-Headed Calf and co-founder of The Dyke Division. She is a lead writer and performer Room for Cream, which ran for three seasons at La Mama in NYC, 2008-10. In the fall of 2017, The Dyke Division was invited to revive Cream and write Season 4 as part the New Museum's "Trigger: Gender as a Tool and a Weapon."
Christine Shallenberg is a multimedia artist whose work ranges in scale from intimate biometric monitoring to mediated light and sound installations to participatory choreographies for audiences. She currently co-engineers the JCSpaceRadio collaborative, engaging in a casually critical dialogue with frequencies through workshops, performances and interactive installations. As Lighting Designer for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, she designed Second Hand, Antic Meet, Nearly 902 and more than 30 unique Event performances seen around the world. Her work has been recognized through a DCASE Chicago project grant and residencies at Links Hall, Chicago and Signal Culture, NY.
