Going Attractions: The Definitive Story of the Movie Palace
In other countries they built palaces for royalty or religion - in the United States, we built them to see movies. This is the story of the motion picture industry and the impact it has had on our culture, from the first silent films in storefront nickelodeons, to the ornate palaces built on the verge of the Great Depression by the studio system, and how their location in city centers has been impacted over the decades by economic investment in suburban growth, the changing movie industry, and finally the struggle to save these historic buildings that provide a window into our past.
