An improv comedy and music double feature! My Town improv performs a fully unscripted, long-form coming of age narrative that will leave you nostalgic. They'll be followed by local singer-songwriter Joe Kopel who packs a mean lyrical punch with some sweet melodious guitar.
My Town started improvising together nearly three years ago and has been performing regularly ever since! Our most independent and self-promoted show was "Snow Wizard Days" at the Phoenix Theater. My Town performs on stages around Minneapolis and has performed in multiple month-long runs at HUGE Theater. We regularly host music and improv shows at the Bryant Lake Bowl Theater, we will be co-headlining a show at this year's Twin Cities Improv Festival, and will be performing at this years Fringe Festival this August. The group has performed at festivals in Fargo, North Dakota (Fargo Improv Festival) and La Crosse, Wisconsin (Coulee Region Sketch and Improv Festival) and performed at the Seattle Festival of Improvisational Theater in February.
Joe Kopel is a trio, a vessel for rock and pop and songwriting. With seasoned locals Ben Neitge on drums and Leng Moua on bass, the music brings to life classics like John Prine and darker contemporaries like David Bazan, while finding a rhythm of its own.
Joe Kopel has been writing songs since he was a teenager. His first full-length album, Topics, put out in 2018, is an imaginative, cathartic effort among the years best listens. The best songs strike the balance between critique and confessional comedy, as on "Help Me," (a song in which the singer asks Tom T. Hall and Jesus to save him from corporate evil) and "Peace and Love," which turns a dubious slogan into both a critique and an acceptance of the very terms (it's just so dumb / I'm just so dumb). At turns warm and playful as well as world-weary and satirical, Topics is sure to win any listeners who are mentally alive and looking for a connection to something human in these modern times.
