Now in its third year, KYUkeFest celebrates the ukulele by bringing together national known Grammy-winning artists and local talent to Lexington. The festival includes unique classes, jam opportunities, flash mobs, a ukulele marketplace, and regional food. Ukulele players of all levels will find plenty of opportunities to learn and play along, while non-players can get a first-hand look at why the uke is exploding in popularity.
"KYukefest is a small festival and intends to stay that way," says festival organizer Sarabeth Brownrobie. "We are able to offer fantastic classes with lots of interaction with our artists. Attendees have become like family, and we look forward to seeing them every year!"
Artists appearing at the festival include: Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer Two-time Grammy® Award winners, this Maryland duo brings superb harmonies backed by virtuosity on the ukulele. The Boston Globe called them Spellbinding acoustic musicians, with a rare mastery of American roots styles.
Victor and Penny This duo from Kansas City bring their hometowns riff-driven style to their swing-infused folk-jazz, delivered with class, joy, and soaring musical improvisation. Christ Spector of the Midwest Record says, this duo hits it out of the park with something charming and subversive at the same time.
Also appearing: Devin Scott, Mims Ukes, Petey Mack, Jonathan and his four-fingered fiasco, Sarah Smitha, and Richard Cisneros.
A final class schedule is being developed and may include songwriting, funk ukulele, jazz techniques, fingerpicking, care and feeding of the ukulele, ukulele duets, ear training, and harmony singing.
