Speaker: Ami Thompson, Conservation Biology Ph.D. Candidate, University of Minnesota
Dragonflies are tenacious, beautiful, and delightfully curious creatures. Ami will bring you along on her journey to understand how both really common and super rare dragonflies manage to scrape out a living in our climatically extreme great northern state. This talk will feature photos and videos of her adventurous field work executed in remote areas of Minnesota - demonstrating just how crazy scientists can be when motivated to find answers to their research questions. Woven into the science story-telling will be a dash of personal narrative about how citizen science opened the door for Ami to earn her PhD.
Ami Thompson has one foot in the world of the education and the other in scientific research. She has worked as a national park ranger, a state park interpretive naturalist, runs her own environmental interpretation consulting business, authored the Dragonfly Curriculum Guide, is a board member for the Minnesota Dragonfly Society, and is a Conservation Biology Ph.D. candidate advised by Dr. Karen Oberhauser and Dr. Rob Blair.
Café Scientifique is a happy hour exchange of ideas about science, environment, and popular culture that features experts from a variety of fields on diverse and often provocative topics.
