Diet is a key factor shaping the inner world of our digestive systems, but studying this relationship is complicated by the rather personal nature of our diets and microbiomes. By using new methods to model dietary intake we can better explore how specific foods and eating patterns influence our microbes.
At tonight's Cafe we'll discuss two recent diet + microbiome studies: one reveals just how personalized these relationships are; the other collaborates with community health providers to investigate whether changes in diet and gut microbiome composition contribute to higher obesity rates and other health problems for people who immigrate to the U.S.
Abby Johnson is postdoctoral associate and registered dietitian in the University of Minnesota's BioTechnology Institute. Her research focuses broadly on the intersection of diet and the gut microbiome.
