Featuring Mike Verhoeven, Ph.D. candidate in Fisheries and Aquatic Biology, University of Minnesota
The plant communities that lie below the surface of our lakes are incredibly valuable, both ecologically and economically. Human introductions of new species to Minnesota lakes mean that native plants are under threat from new competitors for nutrients, light and space. When these new competitors dominate and cause problems, we label them invasive species. Fortunately, lake plants under threat from invasive species don't have to go it alone: across our state, lake managers have entered the fight against aquatic invasive plants. At tonight's Cafe, we'll check in on the current - and future - state of aquatic ecosystems by exploring the ecology of invasions and their management through the lens of Minnesota's lakes.
Mike Verhoeven is a Ph.D. candidate in Fisheries and Aquatic Biology in the University of Minnesota's Conservation Sciences graduate program. His research focuses on ecology and management of aquatic invasive plants. He pairs analysis of observational datasets collected during aquatic plant management in the state of Minnesota with field experiments to elucidate the mechanisms by which invaders and native plants interact.
Café Scientifique is a happy hour exchange of ideas about science, environment, and popular culture that features experts from a variety of fields on diverse and often provocative topics. Cafe Scientifique is an independent production of CafeSciMN.org.
