Story Club Minneapolis is starting its 6th year as Minneapolis's only live monthly storytelling show featuring both an open mic segment and a curated set of performers from all over the Twin Cities arts scene (and beyond). The Story Club stage showcases autobiographical stories -- especially those that are bold, vulnerable, unexpected, and connected to the complexity of our cultural environment...and especially voices that audiences might not get to hear in other contexts. No two Story Club evenings are ever alike, but each month when we wrap up the show, we feel like weve witnessed a new, unique little community coming together.
So! Starting at 6pm, audience members are invited to put their names in the jar for the opportunity to tell an up-to-7-minute story onstage. When the show begins, four tellers are drawn at random to perform, and they'll be followed by our featured guests. Does this make you want to tell a story? GOOD! (Do it! Do it! Do it!)
Story Club's host and producer is actor/writer Amy Salloway! She's the creator of the award-winning autobiographical touring solo plays Does This Monologue Make Me Look Fat?, So Kiss Me Already, Herschel Gertz!, and Circumference, as well as the two-person show Entwined. November's featured performers are Dawn Tomlinson, Saymoukda Duangphouxay Vongsay, and Cori Nakamura Lin, with an exciting special appearance by When Everything Was Everything -- the JUST-published storybook written by Saymoukda and illustrated by Cori, conveying through poetic language and patchwork memories of a child's Southeast Asian refugee experience.
Saymoukda Duangphouxay Vongsay is a poet, playwright, and cultural producer. Her work has been presented by the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center, Theater Mu, and Lazy Hmong Woman Productions. She has received fellowships from The Loft Literary Center and Playwrights Center; and creative grants from the Jerome Foundation, the John S. and James L. Cori Nakamura Lin is a Japanese/Taiwanese-American illustrator and graphic designer based in Minneapolis & Chicago. Through art she amplifies stories from underrepresented people and cultures. When Everything Was Everything is her first book.
A Korean adoptee, born after the war to a Korean mother and a GI father, Dawn Tomlinson has spent the past several years involved in rediscovering her roots in the small villages near the DMZ. She has studied Bojagi (Korean quilting) and Samulnori (Korean drumming) in Korea, as well as traveled to Korea on adoptee tours. Locally, Dawn is the President of Adopsource, a non-profit. Their documentary, Candid Conversations on Adoption, was produced in 2014. She has also served on the board of several organizations, including KAWA, MAKA, Camp Choson, and Korean Heritage House + Jang-mi Korean Dance & Drum. She is also part of the local drumming group Shinparam and has written articles for Korean Quarterly.
