Following up after a sold-out show at Icehouse in March, Nation joins forces with local chamber musicians to present an eclectic genre-bending performance featuring local rock star chamber musicians Sam Bergman, Cicely Parnas, and SPEARFISHER.
Nation is a collaborative vocal band pioneered by composer/performers Jocelyn Hagen and Timothy C. Takach. Their first EP, My Life Around You, was released in 2017 and includes five stunning pop a cappella cover songs. Check it out on Spotify & iTunes.
Violist Sam Bergman has been a member of the Minnesota Orchestra since 2000. He serves as host and head writer for the Orchestras Inside the Classics concert series and also leads the Symphonic Adventures series aimed at high school students. Away from Minneapolis, he is Principal Violist of the California-based Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, plays regularly as a member of the IRIS Orchestra in Memphis, and teaches at the Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music in New Hampshire.
Jocelyn Hagen composes music that has been described as "simply magical" (Fanfare Magazine) and "dramatic and deeply moving" (Star Tribune, Minneapolis/St. Paul). Her first forays into composition were via songwriting, and this is very evident in her work. Her melodic music is rhythmically driven, texturally complex, and has recently become more experimental in nature. In 2013 she released an EP entitled MASHUP, in which she performs Debussy's "Doctor Gradus Ad Parnassum" while singing Ed Sheeran's "The A Team." www.jocelynhagen.com
American cellist Cicely Parnas, praised for her "velvety sound, articulate passagework and keen imagination" (The New York Times), performs recitals, concertos, and chamber music across the globe. This summer she attended the Sitka International Cello Seminar as Artist Apprentice to Zuill Bailey, and in the 2017-2018 season she will appear as soloist with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. SPEARFISHER/Peter John: I'm a classically trained pianist and composer (Masters from Cleveland Institute of Music, DMA in Piano and Composition from the University of Minnesota) who is passionate about the future of classical music. I see our music growing together with the culture of electronics rather than standing in opposition to it. Using electronic manipulations and piano, I collaborated with Son Lux on a track that is slated for release in mid 2014 and created a podcast on the future of classical music, interviewing forward thinking classically trained artists Kishi Bashi, Judd Greenstein and Son Lux that was released on Joyful Noise Records in 2013 and features my original music and sound design. Most recently I've been producing Ashley Dubose's upcoming album, and worked with Dan Richards from One Direction on new songs. I make electronic music under the name SPEARFISHER and I am always interested in new projects. From live looped ambient cello tracks to forward thinking manipulations of sax and flute. I recently premiered new works at Nautilus Theater in St. Paul and have begun work on a fully staged piece of music theater, "The Donnor Party." www.sprfshr.com
Reviewed as "gorgeous" (Washington Post) and "stunning" (Lawrence Journal-World), the music of Timothy C. Takach has risen fast in the concert world. His compositions have been performed on A Prairie Home Companion, The Boston Pops holiday tour, and at venues including the Library of Congress, Kennedy Center and Royal Opera House Muscat.
