The Downrange Telemetrics duo of Nick Jaffe and Becca Barniskis present an evening of music and words featuring Becca's parents, Walter and Mary Sue Barniskis. As an engineer at Honeywell in Minneapolis, Walter helped design critical guidance systems for the Gemini and Apollo spacecraft.  This three-act show will explore through dialog, music and sound, the historical myths and realities of The Space Age, a time of technological wonder, "patriotic mission," and social upheaval.

Featuring:
Becca Barniskis - Vocals, Interrogatory, Fx, Walter and Mary Sue's Daughter
Nick Jaffe - Guitar, Fx, Vague Sense of Weightlessness
Walter Barniskis - Design Electrical Engineer, Project Gemini, Project Apollo; Becca's Father
Mary Sue Barniskis - Creative Woman; Becca's Mother

Act I: "The Honey and the Well"
Becca, inhabiting multiple personas, interrogates her parents about their lives in The Space Age, accompanied by a dense and atmospheric score by Nick Jaffe. The piece will investigate the life of a middle class, Catholic family living in a Minnesota suburb, a family linked by many strands to the drama unfolding above as America "raced to the moon."

Act II:  Gemini VIII Tumbles
A song cycle that tells the story of the near-disastrous Gemini VIII mission (1966) in which the space craft began to spin uncontrollably and almost cost the astronauts their lives. Composed and performed by Nick and Becca.

Act III:  Ed White Won't Come Inside
During the Gemini IV mission astronaut Ed White conducted the first U.S. "space walk."  He was so reluctant to end the experience that he nearly exhausted his oxygen and had to be ordered to re-enter the space craft multiple times. Using unique live audio looping techniques, Becca and Nick will construct a set of music using the astronauts' and ground controllers' language from mission transcripts and the voices of members of the audience, that will explore the strange phenomenon of astronauts who are so compelled by floating alone in the cosmos that they will risk the mission and their lives to stay outside their ship for "just a few more minutes."

The performance will be followed by an informal question and answer with the audience which will include other former Honeywell engineers who worked on the space program.

Downrange Telemetrics is a collaboration between noted Twin Cities-based poet/performer/singer Becca Barniskis and guitarist Nick Jaffe, a veteran of the Chicago soul, hip hop, post-rock, and experimental music scenes. The name Downrange Telemetrics speaks to the bands mission: to provide audiences raw "telemetric" data in the form of sounds, words, associations, stories, and characters with which to construct their own, unique cinematic experience. "Downrange" is a term used in spaceflight to describe the horizontal distance of a rockets travel from its launch site.

DT has performed to critical acclaim in a wide variety of music and other venues across the U.S., in Europe, and on radio and live-television. Barniskis's mesmerizing voice, innovative use of electronic effects, angular imagery and odd characters and stories are at once comedic and sinister, and blend effortlessly with Nick Jaffe's evocative improvisational soundscapes and hypnotic grooves. A typical Downrange Telemetrics set has been described as "Something like a series of ripping Beckett mini-plays scored by Laurie Anderson and Pete Cosey's alien love-child, but really like nothing youve heard or seen before. Full of surprises!"

Downrange Telemetrics is known for performing in unlikely and unconventional venues. The self-produced one-hour live television special, DT After Dark, debuted in July 2015 on MTN television and has been a staple of their programming ever since. Nick and Becca also perform as the "DT Mobile Unit" for which they employ backpack-mounted electronics that allow the duo to perform in almost any environment; in 2016 they performed on the frozen White Bear Lake as a commission for the 2016 Art Shanty Project.

Downrange Telemetrics latest album release is Mimi & Xavier Star in a Museum that Fits Entirely in One's Pocket, available as a vinyl LP or a high-quality format digital download. DT has also performed and recorded in collaborations with bass player Anthony Cox (Joe Lovano, John Scofield) and multi-instrumentalist Martin Dosh (Dosh, Andrew Bird). Nick and Becca also perform and record regularly with their 5-piece funk-rock band Pancake7.
