Berlin's Treasure Trove
Over 5 Million Objects - 19 Museums - An infinite number of stories. The Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation guards a treasure that is unique worldwide. Its 19 museums, archives and libraries hold a collection that allows the mind to travel all over the world and through the whole history of mankind. More then 5 million objects from everyday life, archaeological artifacts as well as masterpieces of art - as different as the world famous bust of Nefertiti or an installation of Joseph Beuys - form one of the five greatest universal collections in the world. But these objects are not just there to be appreciated for their beauty: they give answers to the important questions that have concerned us humans from the beginning of time. Do I look good today? - This might be the first question that concerns us in the morning. But: what is beauty? What do we perceive as beautiful and why? The world-renowned bust of Nefertiti holds a fascinating answer: the sense of beauty of the old Egyptians changed radically as their religious beliefs changed from polytheism to monotheism. Our ideals of beauty are closely linked to our view of the world. How can we use our natural resources and still live in harmony with nature? Polynesian seafarers conquered great parts of the pacific using the power of the wind to sail and the course of the stars to navigate. To be as energy efficient as possible, their boats have employed techniques for thousands of years that even modern science of our time could not improve. Do we have to fear death and what comes afterwards? - A guide through the underworld unfolds an apocalyptic vision: Sandro Botticelli's illustrations of Dante's 'Divine Comedy'. And how can different religions coexist peacefully in a society? -Fascinating paintings from the house of a Christian merchant, who lived in the 17th century in Aleppo, stand out as a powerful symbol of religious tolerance. But what function and responsibility do those museums have that host such treasures? - The head of the museums' provenance research group travels to Cameroon to investigate about a throne from the kingdom of Bamoum that was brought to Berlin during Germany's colonial era. Meetings with high representatives of the palace and the Royal Museum offer new perspectives on Germany's colonial past as well as on today's relations between the two countries. 'Berlin's Treasure Trove' is not just a documentary on Berlin's museums. It is an exciting and entertaining journey through the cultural history of mankind.
