Architectural Order: Evolution of Principles
Join hosts Arturo Levenfeld, AIA, Saxon Sigerson, AIA and Kris Barkley, AIA for a casual evening of discussion centered around the topic of design as it relates to architectural order.
Classical architecture often used symmetry to create a sense of balance, strength and serenity. Modern architecture challenged that notion by expressing the use or function of the structure in plan and aesthetic often resulting in asymmetry and organic form. Today, many buildings are being designed in a more free-form manner that is akin to sculpture.
Do buildings need a defined order to be valid design responses? Does the modernist principle of Form Follows Function override all other concerns? Our open forum discussion is intended to explore these questions and others in our continuing Architecture Matters series.
