Food Market Field Trip
Fire and Earth Kitchen is now offering market field trips to various grocery stores in the Seattle area. These are a lovely add-on to our cooking classes, allowing you to walk with a healthy foods expert through the aisles of local grocery stores. By offering these field trips we hope to soothe trepidation over shopping for "natural" foods, dispel any myths about the cost or complication of shopping for your health, and empower you to shop confidently in a variety of markets across the Sound.
Over the course of roughly one hour you will learn:
*How to identify many different varieties of produce; some of their medicinal benefits, what they're good for and suggestions on preparing them. (Get all your questions answered; which one is Napa cabbage? what about bok choy? what do you do with all those mushrooms?)
*Which fruits and vegetables are best to buy organic? Which ones are ok to buy conventionally grown?
*How to conquer the bulk section! Buying beans, grains, nuts, sea salt, spices; the simplicity, economy, and fun of it finally revealed.
*The difference between various salts, sugars, flours and oils. What to use them for and when.
*Ways to save money on buying "natural" foods. What to buy pre-packaged and why.
*Our favorite brands, what we use here in the kitchen and where to find them in the market.
*Essential pantry items to keep stocked in your kitchen, facilitating easy healthful meals any day of the week.
Included will be a Fire and Earth Kitchen "essential" pantry list which you can keep in your wallet for easy shopping. Also included will be a new Fire and Earth Kitchen recipe which uses some of the ingredients we will discuss. Each trip will be roughly one hour and will take place at various markets around the Sound. Each outing is limited to 4-5 participants (minimum 3), which will allow for ample questions and ease of movement through the store. f you have a request for a field trip in a market near you, please email to let us know, we may be able to schedule one in the near future.
