Following his Caffe Lena debut with Lake Street Dive's Rachael Price last winter, Vilray returns to Caffe Lena as a solo artist. He sings, whistles, and plays guitar with a sound that recalls both the warmth of radio's golden age and the intimacy of parlor concerts in a time before recordings. He performs forgotten gems of the big band era and original music could be mistaken for old jazz standards.
With the 2017 release of three original singles, Vilray's unique take on the Tin Pan Alley style is gaining wide acclaim. His work explores the depths of humor, heartache, and romance captured in the varieties of music played in the 30s, 40s and 50s. These songs were entirely recorded live and lathe-cut to vinyl in real time--lending them a haunting warmth and authentic crackle.
