From the land of Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot, and the Wailin' Jennys, we bring you a sweet sample of Canada's modern folk scene with our Maple Leaf Music Series! Tonight we present Al Parrish, whose huge, charismatic presence, boundless energy, and "that voice" (once described on CBC radio as being "halfway between melted chocolate and sex") brought Canadian, American and British fans to Tanglefoot shows for 17 years. Al's solo repertoire includes new material, carefully chosen covers and traditional songs, and some Tanglefoot favorites. Al plays acoustic guitar, his trademark double bass, or simply sings a capella.
Nova Scotia singer-songwriter Dave Gunning has grown to a point where his name is included alongside artists such as David Francey, Stan Rogers, Bruce Cockburn and Lightfoot. Employing traditional Canadian, folk and country styles, Dave transcends genre with original songs that touch the soul. Full of homespun humor and superb musicianship, his last album, a tribute to John Allan Cameron, was honored with a 2012 Juno Award nomination and was the winner of two 2011 Canadian Folk Music Awards and two East Coast Music Awards.
