Series directed by Angela Pelster
Featuring Joe Horton and Dennis McKenna

This new monthly film series will begin with a brief (5-10 minute) introduction of the movie by the writer who will discuss how it has informed or inspired their writing practice. After the movie, the writer and a specialist (someone engaged with the film's themes or subject matter - a dancer/ scientist/ lawyer/ painter/ film scholar/ activist etc.) will have a conversation about the film, writing, art making, and the ways in which different practices inform one another. The audience is invited to participate in the conversation through questions and comments. There will be food and drinks and smart artists saying smart things!

Joe Horton is a rapper and interdisciplinary artist who received national attention for his work with experimental rap acts No Bird Sing and Mixed Blood Majority. After directing a slew of music videos and theater performances, Horton created "A Hill in Natchez," an ambitious piece of music, dance, and visuals that premiered at the Southern Theater in July '16. Joe will be presenting "Kurosawa's Dreams" and be in conversation with Dennis McKenna.

Dennis McKenna is an American Ethnopharmacologist, lecturer and author. He is the brother of well-known psychedelics proponent Terence McKenna, with whom he co-wrote "Invisible Landscapes." McKenna is a founding board member and director of Ethnopharmacology at the Heffter Research Institute, a non-profit organization concerned with the investigation of the potential therapeutic uses of psychedelic medicines. His research led to the development of natural products for Aveda, as well as greater awareness of natural products and medicines.
