What exactly is 'Queering Catharsis'?
Historically, catharsis is a term used to describe a release of repressed emotions and frustrations in order to attain personal relief, to pacify.
WE ASSERT THAT IN THE CURRENT CONFIGURATION OF OUR CULTURE, SEEKING 'PERSONAL RELIEF' IS NOT ENOUGH!
Tonight we 'queer' catharsis by releasing our truths and shattering imposed silences unabashedly. Not solely in the name of finding personal reprieve, but to ignite further action in ourselves and our communities to challenge, dismantle, and transform hegemonic power structures that oppress ALL OF US.
Let us introduce ourselves:
Holo Lue Choy Holo Lue Choy is a Minneapolis based interdisciplinary performance artist. Her work prioritizes the experiences of historically oppressed groups, especially transgender people and people of colour, and how such socio-political identities effect the way one interacts with the world. Their work for Break the Silence, entitled j.ud o/r untitled solo, is a study of the intersections of their Chinese identity with being transfeminine. Through breaking this silence, she aims to create a sense of communal unity by presenting both researched and experiential narratives which go frequently unacknowledged.
Jäc Pau Jäc Pau (POW!) is a queer performer in Minneapolis. Theyve danced around the Twin Cities in burlesque troupes that include Carnivale Revolver (St Cloud), Bippys Burlesque ORama, Balentines Burlesque, GLAM! Godz, Babelight productions. They won Producers Choice at the 2017 FIERCE: International Queer Burlesque Festival, and will be a Featured Performer at 2018 Fierce: Queer Burlesque Festival this May in Toronto Canada. They are a cast member of a new show in the twin cities called TRANSCENDENCE at LUSH that premiers February 16th!
Leila Awadallah Leila Awadallah is an emerging Palestinian-American dancer and choreographer based in the Twin Cities. Her work merges dance with social justice and Arabic studies to address the occupation of Palestine in performance. Through collecting and arranging fragments of movement, sound, and film she explores the tension and beauty of embodying both Palestinian and American identity. Silenced and erased, demonized by mainstream American media, oppressed by the actions of the Israeli State, and facing the ongoing colonization of stolen Palestinian land - Leilas work emerges from all of this in resistance. She is a company member of Ananya Dance Theatre, a space that nurtures and guides her in the art of intersecting dance + social justice.
Taja Will Performer Taja Will is a queer, Latina, transracial adoptee. Her artistic body of work includes multi-dimensional contemporary performance and holistic therapy. These two parallel worlds come together through modalities of somatic movement and structured improvisation. Wills aesthetic is one of spontaneity, bold choice making, sonic and kinetic partnership and the ability to move in relationship to risk and intimacy. Her practice and performance works are deeply rooted in exploring a visceral connection to current socio-cultural realities.
Freaque Freaque is a South Minneapolis based duo playing music for those who don't fit the standards our culture expects us to uphold. They are continuously experimenting with their sound which ranges from bluesy singer/songwriting to dreamy anthems. Their music tells stories of past hardships, better worlds and love.
Big Gay Mexican The Big Gay Mexican is an actor/singer/fashionista. He has been seen in various cabarets and social events throughout the Twin Cities. The mission for his work is to inspire and promote self-love. He wants to send a message to anyone who has been told they were different or was told they needed to change that we must all have courage and be kind to make this world a better place. In order to love ourselves we must be free to be ourselves.
Cullen Roger Propp (aka cully) (aka Jenna Cis) Cullen Roger Propp is a white, femme, queer, genderfucking artist and student based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Their work, both creatively and academically, is focused on exploring how the performing arts can be utilized to subvert, dismantle, and transform dominant systems of power that rule over our global culture in various, but equally insidious, ways. Tonight, she hopes to provide space for her fellow marginalized artists to shout, no SCREAM, their respective truths, and open up a conversation on how we can fight for transformative justice in our communities. They assert the importance of recognizing, radically accepting, and celebrating difference among humanity, and building intersectionally-mindful coalitions that will allow us to fight for justice while challenging hegemonic systems that inherently seek to divide us.
