. "SPERO PLAYS NYRO" by The Christine Spero Group:
Laura Nyro was the quintessential singer/songwriter/pianist -- one of the first. Her groundbreaking music crossed the genres of folk, rock and jazz; and she was one of the most covered artists in the 1960s and 1970s (Eli's Coming, Stoned Soul Picnic, Wedding Bell Blues, Sweet Blindness). Her tragically premature passing in 1997 shocked her fans. Finally, in 2012 she was inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame.
In their new show, "Spero Plays Nyro," The Christine Spero Group will bring their own kind of power to Laura Nyro's music. Their arrangements with improvisation mixed with Laura's original arrangements have preserved the integrity of her music. Christine Spero has loved Laura's music from a young age when she was given "Eli and the Thirteenth Confession" by a radio DJ friend. She was inspired by it to be bold in writing, singing and playing piano. Christine was the winner of the USA Songwriting Competition in the Jazz Category with her song, He Wasn't Always That Way. She was also a finalist with Caribbean Nights, a festive tropical celebration that typifies the joyful exotica that drives her second recording, My Spanish Dream, a rich Brazilian/Latin/world fusion offering that dances blithely between pop and jazz. The project was produced by Elliot Spero. Diverse and daring, it highlights Spero's love for lush vocal harmonies.
Christine recorded her first songs and some by Neil Sedaka with Don Kirschner on RCA as a teen. Her music is now listened to around the world. Joining Christine will be saxophonist/percussionist Elliot Spero, bassist Scott Petito and drummer Peter O'Brien. The group will also be performing some of Christine's compositions.
Their new CD, "Spero Plays Nyro" will be released this summer. Look for them on June 7th at the 9th Annual Mountain Jam Festival at Hunter Mt.
