Story Club Minneapolis is in its FIFTH year in the Twin Cities!
Story Club's structure is half open-mic, half curated performers. Our stage showcases true personal stories, like a slam, but without the intimidating and competitive judges and scoring. It's a great, welcoming evening for beginners and polished artists alike.
Before each show, audience members are invited to put their names in the hat (okay, it's a jar) for the opportunity to tell an up-to-7-minute story onstage. The four storytellers picked from the jar by the host will bare their souls and talents, and they'll be followed by our featured guests. Does this make you want to tell a story? GOOD! (Do it! Do it! Februarys show hosts are Sam Larsen-Feree, Jamie Amy Ann, and Amy Salloway and our featured storytellers will be local writer and publisher Mike Finley and spoken word poet, writer, and musician Chelley McLear.
Chelley McLear is a recent blow-in from Belfast, Northern Ireland. She began her love affair with Minneapolis at the 2006 MN Fringe while touring a spoken-word and music show as a member of Belfast Poets (later Scream Blue Murmur), and returned with the group twice more, to perform "The Morning After The Summer Of Love," and "Something's Gone Wrong In The Dreamhouse." Since leaving the group in 2011, Chelley has expanded her writing and performance into storytelling. In 2015 she received an ACES award from the Arts council of Northern Ireland, and in 2017 her solo show "Rainbows and Razor Blades" was long listed for the UK Saboteur Awards. Chelley is delighted to be showing her love for Minnesota on a more permanent basis these days.
Mike Finley's first job was as a zookeeper at a roadside attraction in Ohio. He looked after numerous African animals, including Loma, an olive baboon. Mike is a frequent performer (both solo and with his sidekick Danny Klecko) at Cheap Theatre, as well as at Barbaric Yawp, the Tributary poetry Reading Series, and beloved writer Carol Connolly's monthly readings.
