This new monthly film series will begin with a brief (5-10 minute) introduction of the movie by the writer who will discuss how it has informed or inspired their writing practice. After the movie, the writer and a specialist (someone engaged with the film's themes or subject matter - a dancer/ scientist/ lawyer/ painter/ film scholar/ activist etc.) will have a conversation about the film, writing, art making, and the ways in which different practices inform one another. The audience is invited to participate in the conversation through questions and comments. There will be food and drinks and smart artists saying smart things!
Our writer this month, Ed Bok Lee, is the author of Whorled (Coffee House Press), among other works. Honors for his poetry include an American Book Award, a PEN/Open Book Award, a Minnesota Book Award, and an Asian American Literary Award (Members Choice). As a translator, his work has ranged from, most recently, the poetry of Park Jeong-dae (South Korea) to the Russian prose of science fiction writer, Anatoli Kim (Kazakhstan). Lee's third collection of poems will be published in 2019.He teaches poetry each spring at Metropolitan State University.
Februarys specialist will be Andrea Bell, a professor of Spanish and Latin American Studies in Hamline University's College of Liberal Arts. She enjoys teaching at all levels, from beginning Spanish to advanced courses on literature and popular culture. Her research on Spanish-language science fiction keeps her active at professional meetings, on editorial boards and as a literary critic and translator. She and a colleague have published two volumes of science fiction from Latin America and Spain, in English translation. Bell travels frequently to Latin America and has taken Hamline students to Chile and Argentina. Her BA in Spanish and German is from Whitman College and her master's and doctoral work in Spanish and Latin American Studies was completed at Stanford University.
