Story Club Minneapolis is in its FIFTH year in the Twin Cities! Join us for our first show of 2018 -- Thursday, January 18th at the Bryant Lake Bowl & Theater! Yup, the 18th in 18! Were hoping, based on no scientific evidence whatsoever, that thats good luck for the year. :)
Story Club's structure is half open-mic, half curated performers. Our stage showcases true personal stories, like a slam, but without the intimidating and competitive judges and scoring. It's a great, welcoming evening for beginners and polished artists alike.
Before each show, audience members are invited to put their names in the hat (okay, it's a jar) for the opportunity to tell an up-to-7-minute story onstage. The four storytellers picked from the jar by the host will bare their souls and talents, and they'll be followed by our featured guests. Does this make you want to tell a story? GOOD! (Do it! Do it! Do it!)
January's show hosts are Sam Larsen-Feree, Jamie Amy Ann, and Amy Salloway. Featured Storytellers are Michael Kleber-Diggs and Chava Kokhleffel.
Michael Kleber-Diggs is a 2018 recipient of an Artist Initiative grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. He was a 2015 Fellow with the Givens Foundation for African-American Literature and a 2015-2016 winner of the Loft Mentor Series in Poetry. His essay, A Fundamental Human Yearning, is included in How Dare We Write a collection of essays on writing edited by Sherry Quan Lee. Two of his poems will appear in an anthology of poetry about fatherhood forthcoming from Nodin Press. Michaels work has also appeared in North Dakota Quarterly, Paper Darts and Water~Stone Review. Michael is a Contributor with Twin Cities Daily Planet, writes literary criticism for the Star-Tribune, teaches poetry through the Minnesota Prison Writing Workshop, and blogs at michaelkleberdiggs.com. Michael is husband to Karen, a horticulturist who makes art with flowers. Karen and Michael have a 16-year-old daughter who is an accomplished dancer and newly-licensed driver. The Kleber-Diggses live on a busy street in Saint Paul with two strange cats, Curly and Mocha.
Chava Kokhleffel is a theater-artist, organizer and educator with deep roots in Theater/Pedagogy of the Oppressed and physical approaches to performance.
