SONNY LANDRETH:
When it comes to Sonny Landreth, even Eric Clapton is a fan: "He's probably the most underestimated musician on the planet, and also probably one of the most advanced." As if to back his words up with actions, Clapton honored Landreth with the #1 time-slot at his 2007 Crossroads Guitar Festival and an amazing guitar duet, culminating with these two greats weaving in & out of each other's improvisations. Mark Knopfler can be seen praising Sonny Landreth's slide guitar playing before they perform together here. In a world where truly great guitar practitioners dot the globe like as many mountain pinnacles on our planet, Sonny Landreth's techniques seem to leave him floating artfully, impossibly above.
Sonny Landreth's 11th album, bearing the fittingly evocative title Elemental Journey, is something very different from the Louisiana slide wizard. Released in May 2012, the new CD is Landreth's first all-instrumental effort and his most adventurous work to date. "From day one on the guitar, many genres of music have had an impact on me" says Landreth. "For these recordings, I drew from some of those influences that I hadn't gone to on previous albums with vocals. Trading off the lyrics this time, I focused solely on the instrumental side and all this music poured out. Then I asked some extraordinary musicians to help me layer the tracks in hopes of inspiring a lot of imagery for the listeners."
Driven by the critically acclaimed telecaster styling of Matt Rae ~a Guitar Player Magazine "Guitar Hero" top 10 finalist~ The Matt Rae Trio performs an infectiously countrified, surf-a-billy, blues-funk-pop-jazz set of original instrumental numbers, as well as a slew of pure-pop-guitar standards that have wowed audiences throughout the northeast. Matt Rae's albums have garnered rave reviews throughout the guitar world, including such industry publications as Vintage Guitar and 20th Century Guitar. Even with his great albums, it is still the live performances that must be seen to be believed. Many have recently enjoyed Matt's guitar work with ARLEN ROTH at the Towne Crier, but he really proved his chops by getting Sonny Landreth's discriminating fans cheering excitedly while opening for Sonny at the Towne Crier on more than one occasion. Matt Rae can hold his own with the best of them!
