JULIA FLOBERG
Julia is a singer-songwriter and multi-genre cellist based in Minneapolis, MN. She has been playing the cello for over 22 years, and started writing poems and songs in her mid-20s.
Julia bases her work on personal experiences. Her songs, stories, and poems draw from things she has witnessed and experienced, either first-hand or through friends, family and acquaintances.
Her first album, Aporia, is a stream of poems and songs that tell an overarching narrative that touches on love, loss, and those painful existential questions that haunt you at three in the morning when you are awoken from a restless sleep.
DELPHIA CELLO QUARTET
The Delphia Cello Quartet is an all-female quartet that plays original arrangements for four cellos. Formed in March 2017, the cello quartet brings a fun classical spin to familiar tunes. As friends and music-lovers, the quartet makes sure that rehearsals and performances involve giggling and serious playing in equal measure. In addition to Julia Floberg, the other quartet members are:
Rachelle LaNae Smith. Rachelle earned her B.A. in Music from the University of Minnesota, where she studied under Tanya Remenikova. Other teachers include Olga Dolgaya, Laura Handler, and Hong Wang. Rachelle is an active performer around the Twin Cities, both as a cellist and as a singer/songwriter under the artist name Rachelle LaNae. She currently teaches cello at St. Josephs School of Music and guitar/piano/voice at Twin Town Guitars. Intrigued by the intersections of music and psychology, Rachelle is also working on publishing her empirically derived theory that it is impossible to be sad while playing the ukulele.
Amanda Burgdorf. Since obtaining her B.A. in music from St. Olaf College, cellist and singer Amanda Burgdorf has performed at the Guthrie, American Swedish Institute, Bloomington Civic Theater, Lanesboro Music Festival, yoga studios, coffee shops, and a raft on the Mississippi River. She performs with her pop-folk band Muus, the Buffalo Community Orchestra, and Improvestra. When not making music, Amanda, a desperate extrovert, loves to bike the city in search of friendly strangers with whom to share a pleasant nod or passing greeting. She loves walking fast, potlucks, and advocating for health care as a human right.
Katherine Canon. Katherine Canon is a cello teacher and performer with a BA in Music and Spanish from St. Olaf College. She teaches individual and group cello lessons through her own studio and MacPhail Center for Music, and plays in a variety of groups in the Twin Cities, including the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra and the band Fox & Coyote. In addition to music, Katherine likes to fill her life with delicious food, good books and plenty of outdoor adventures.
JULIA GAY
Julia Gay is a Minneapolis based writer and performer. She received her B.A. from Macalester College, studying American Studies, Urban Studies, and Theatre. Julia is a dancer with professional dance company, Ananya Dance Theatre, and was one of five artists awarded the 2016-2017 Creative Changemakers Apprenticeship by The DIAL Group. She was a collaborator and ensemble member with physical theatre ensemble, Transatlantic Love Affair, on Promise Land, a devised work that premiered at the Guthrie Theatre in January 2017. In May 2016, as part of Pangea World Theater's Emerging Artist Series, Julia premiered her one-woman show, motherlanded, exploring her personal narrative as a Chinese adoptee.
LIZZETTE CHAPA
Lizzette Chapa is a Mexican-American dancer and choreographer originally from The Rio Grande Valley, Texas. She recently graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a BFA in Dance. During her time at UT she performed works by Rennie Harris, Sidra Bell, Johnnie Mercer, and more. She moved to Minnesota in August 2017, and is honored to share the stage as an apprentice with Ananya Dance Theatre members. Lizzette is passionate about using her art and dance to amplify the voices of underrepresented communities.
PEACE MADIMUTSA
Peace Madimutsa is a Zimbabwean dancer and singer whose mission is to inspire through expression. He holds a BA in Economics and Data Science from Macalester College. His works include 5 Macalester dance concert productions as well as collaboration with acclaimed musicians such as El.i.Be. Peace is delighted and humbled to work with amazing artists on Aporia.
JULIETTE MYERS
Juliette Myers is a mixed-race Chinese-American artist and dancer from Southern California. She has danced in styles including Polynesian dance, contemporary and jazz at her arts high school, and hip hop and West African movement at Macalester College, where she earned her BA in Studio Art and Psychology. She has choreographed independently and co-collaboratively, and her mission is to use art, dance, and performance as a powerful tool for language and connection across boundaries. Juliette is excited and thankful to be a part of the creative process in dancing, exploring movement, and co-choreographing Aporia.
