From the land of Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot, and Neil Young, we bring you a sweet sample of Canada's modern folk scene with our new Maple Leaf Music Series! Our booker travelled to Ontario to scout out exciting artists who would be new to New York State audiences. Tonight we bring you Catherine MacLellan, a Prince Edward Island native now living in Nova Scotia. She was selected as "Critics' Favourite New Discovery" by Penguin Eggs Magazine (Canada's leading folk publication) in 2008. It wasn't long before she became the #1 Roots Artist on iTunes Canada, won the Canadian Folk Music Award, and began touring across North America and Europe.
"MacLellan is the rare young folkie who knows how to write a catchy melody and a concise, accessible lyric. Yet her pop instincts never diminish her deep, folk spirit or quiet soulfulness. Already drawing comparisons to Joni Mitchell in her native Canada, she's a charming talent: delicate yet not wispy, poetic yet not pretentious." - Boston Herald
(Sadly, Bill Bourne had to cancel his appearance this evening because of trouble at the US border crossing. We hope to reschedule Bill's appearance for a later date in this series.)
