Where bluegrass meets Nina Simone. (The Observer) Kaia Kater is a Quebec-born 23-year-old woman of African-Carribbean descent who studied Appalachian music in West Virginia. With a velvety tenor voice and spare banjo accompaniment she makes songs for the here and now that will make your hair stand on end. Her sophomore album, Nine Pin (2016), casts an unflinching eye at the realities faced by people of color in North America every day. With beautifully crafted lyrics and jazz-folk melodies she takes us into a world of poverty, yearning, racism, love and resilience. Kaia Kater is an important new voice in folk music, and its an honor to present her as part of our monthly Bright New Music Series.
