Awe and Wonder
DONNA STERNBERG & DANCERS presents "Awe and Wonder", a performance connecting scientists with choreographers. Four choreographers create new dances inspired by their conversations with four scientists. One scientist is paired with one choreographer, dialoging about the scientists field of study, which then becomes the starting point for the choreographer. The resulting dance is informed by science in some way rather than a literal demonstration of the science. The program includes performances of the dances as well as a post-performance discussion with the scientists and choreographers about their experiences working together. The choreographers come from diverse dance backgrounds and include contemporary choreographers John Pennington and Donna Sternberg, folklorico choreographer Gema Sandoval and commercial choreographer Ricky Palomino. The scientists also span a wide range and include Louisa Bradtmiller (climate science), Devavani Chatterjea (immunology), Paul Nerenberg (computational physics) and Michelle Povinelli (nanophotonics). DS&D has been exploring the intersection between dance and science for over 10 years; this program examines the myriad ways scientists and choreographers collaborate.
