Can political odd couples ever be happy? The Workshop is a full length play written by Alice T. Crowe. This modern day story is essential to writers and anyone who aspires to become a writer.
The Workshop is a moving play about a frustrated angry poet who struggles to discover his voice among a group of wanna be writers in a writer's workshop. He meets his political opposite and struggles to win her over and stay true to his muse while making his art relevant in the age of a black president.
Workshop members test their creative pieces out in front of a sometimes judgmental and critical audience of their peers. The audience connects with their pain, joy, experiences, and triumphs.
The Workshop is a hilariously, satirical commentary about the African American experience. Set in an artsy artist's café for the urban literati, the Workshop participants challenge the notion that black culture is monolithic. The Workshop explores how the contradictions of politics, race and gender impact romantic relationships. The artists struggle with the challenges of making their art relevant in the age of a black president. Should black art change now that we have a black president?
The Workshop is a Tribute to the Late Louis Reyes Rivera. Before his death, Rivera had just finalized a 150-page epic poem Jazz in Jail. A portion of the proceeds of the event will go toward assisting in publishing Jazz in Jail.
The guest director of the staged reading is Arthur French, III. Arthur is a playwright and facilitator of the Fusion Gumbo Writer's Workshop in New York City.

Author: Alice T. Crowe is a partner in the law firm of Crowe & Crowe. She practices civil rights and consumer law. She is a free-lance writer and formerly wrote a local history column for the Journal News called What's in a name. She is currently completing a documentary film called secrets of the Hollow the Hidden History of blacks in Rockland.
Ms. Crowe is a former member of the Board of Trustees for the African American Historical Society of Rockland County. Ms. Crowe is the author of a book, "How to Get Black on Track, a Self Empowerment Guide. She is a member of the Louis Reyes Rivera Writer's Workshop in Bedford Stuyvesant Brooklyn, and a member of the Frank Silvera Playwriting Workshop, and Gumbo Fusion Writer's Workshop.
