BACKGROUND: Two hundred years ago this autumn, a child was born in Southern Germany who would grow up to become one of 19th-century Europe's most enigmatic and compelling figures. At the age of 16, this strange boy appeared on the streets of Nuremburg, barely able to stand, walk or speak. In Kaspar Hauser: The Open Secret of the Foundling Prince, historical facts and characters mix with a supernatural tale of a golden house, a wicked stepmother, and a boy kept in a dark cellar for most of his childhood. Who was he? And why does his story still affect us?
