Join the Minneapolis-based award-winning Flamenco dancer Sachiko La Chayí and her students, beginners to advanced level, for their dance recital FIESTA FLAMENCA at gorgeous Icehouse MPLS on Sunday February 12. Also, FIESTA FLAMENCA will welcome two out-of-state Flamenco artists; guitarist Kristofer Hill (Phoenix AZ, NYC, and Seville, Spain) and singer Olivia Rojas (Phoenix AZ) along with the local guitarist Ross Fellrath. Come and enjoy the beautiful dance by the student performers and celebrate our love for Flamenco!
SACHIKO LA CHAYÍ (TEACHER, DIRECTOR, DANCER, AND PALMERA)
A native of Osaka, Japan, Sachiko Nishiuchi La Chayí is a Twin Cities-based Flamenco dancer, teacher, choreographer and organizer. Besides her work as an independent artist, her current projects include directing Twin Cities Flamenco Collective. She has received recognitions and grants from Minnesota State Arts Board, Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, the Jerome Foundation, the Minnesota SAGE Awards for Dance, and New York State Flamenco Certamen. Her dance and choreography have been commissioned and/or presented by The Walker Art Center, Zorongo Flamenco Dance Theatre, Intermedia Arts, Minneapolis Guitar Quartet, The Southern Theater, and Hamline University. She was a resident artist of Zorongo Flamenco from 2003 to 2009. She lived and studied the art of Flamenco in Seville, Spain from 2010 to 2015 which became the foundation of her current dance and work. Besides her daily life surrounded by the culture of Flamenco in Seville, she owes her artistic foundation to the following incomparable artists and teachers (in alphabetical order); Juan del Gastor, Farruquito, Javier Heredia, Juan del Gastor, Luis Peña, Miguel Funi, Pilar Montoya Manzano La Faraona, and Susana Di Palma.

CATHERINE HIGGINS WHITESIDE
Catherine got her first taste of Spanish dance in Seville, Spain when she enrolled in a sevillanas workshop to prepare for the iconic regional festival Feria de Abril. She was reintroduced to flamenco when she discovered Zorongo Flamenco, and has been taking classes ever since. She has been studying with Sachiko since 2016.
When not dancing with Sachiko or Zorongo, Catherine is likely dancing with her four-year-old daughter, Geneva, or working at her day job in marketing at a local community bank.
JILL RANDALL
A trip to Spain in 2014 inspired Jill to learn the art of flamenco. She has been taking lessons in dance and compás since that trip and was privileged to return to Spain for the Festival de Jerez in February 2015. Jill is drawn to the richness, complexity and depth of feeling in flamenco and is thankful for a robust, supportive flamenco community in the Twin Cities. Talented teachers who have given much to Jill include Kristina de Sacramento, Kim "K Kara" Rich, and Sachiko. Jill is a clinical social worker who works with patients and their families who are going through bone marrow transplant.
LA SARITA
La Sarita is originally from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico before relocating to Minneapolis, MN. Sarita is currently studying with Sachiko. She has also studied with Kristina del Sacramento, Susana di Palma, and Colette Illarde. In 2003, she earned a scholarship to study Spanish Literature and Linguistics at La Fundación de José Ortega y Gasset in Toledo, Spain. When Sarita wasn't writing papers, she studied flamenco at Merevel escuela de música y danza in Toledo. After a seven year break, Sarita hopes to deepen her commitment to her development as a dancer as she continues her studies with Sachiko. She is currently pursuing her Masters Degree in Education at the University of St Thomas.
NEHA GARG
A native of India, Neha, who loved watching the beautiful hand and arm movements of Flamenco even before she knew anything about it, took her first Flamenco dance class with Kristina de Sacramento at Anda Flamenco in 2014 after she moved from NYC. She has taken classes with Colette Illarde and AJ Franzel at Zorongo Flamenco and studied compás (Flamenco rhythms) with Kim Rich. She is studying with Sachiko. Her rediscovery and reconnection to dancing has been a process of exploring herself and the world around her. Although she humbly regards herself as a beginner, she is very excited about this opportunity to share her expression with the audience and sees this performance as her important milestone as a dancer.
PING WANG
Ping published 12 books of poetry, prose and translation: American Visa, Foreign Devil, Of Flesh and Spirit, New Generation, Aching for Beauty, The Magic Whip, The Last Communist Virgin, 10,000 Waves Shes recipient of National Endorsement for the Arts, Bush Foundation, Lannan and McKnight Fellowships. Shes the founder and director of Kinship of Rivers project. When she was a child in China, she found a card with a flamenco dancer in a burning pile of books. She did not know about Flamenco but the gypsy spirit ignited the fire since then. After she moved to Minnesota 35 years later, she started dancing with Zorongo Flamenco. Its music and movements have kept the fire going in her heart and limbs. She has studied with Sachiko since 2016.
RACHEL SCHMITT
Rachel started studying with Sachiko in September of 2016. Her first exposure to flamenco was as a Spanish major at Gustavus Adolphus College when Zorongo Flamenco performed on campus. While Rachel studied Spanish at the Universidad de Sevilla in 2010, she also took an intensive week-long Sevillanas class. Returning to Sevilla in 2011-2012 to teach English, she developed a deeper interest in flamenco as an art form. She hopes to continue dancing as an act of art education, self-care, and self-expression. Rachel is grateful for Sachikos patience, technical expertise, and sense of humor. She truly enjoys learning alongside her peers in the Beginning class, and continues to be inspired by Sachiko as a teacher, friend, and performer. Rachel is currently a full-time student working on her Masters Degree in Evaluation Studies at the University of Minnesota.

KRISTOFER HILL (FLAMENCO GUITARIST, PHOENIX AZ, NYC, & SEVILLE SPAIN)
Kristofer Hill has spent the last four years intensively studying flamenco guitar and performing in Seville, Spain. He has worked for dance schools of Juana Amaya, Luis Peña, Juan Polvillo, and Flamencos por el Mundo. In 2014 and 15, he had the honor of performing with el maestro José Galvan and in his flamenco dance Company. Kristofer currently performs and teaches internationally as an independent artist and plays guitar for flamenco dance companies including Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana (NYC), Inspiracion Flamenca (Phoenix), and Flamenco por La Vida (Phoenix). He has performed as a principal guitarist with internationally renowned artists such as Carmen Ledesma, Jose Mendez, and Javier Heredia.
Prior to his life as a Flamenco guitarist, Kristofer had an opportunity to study with renowned composer Daniel Lentz and performing artist Richard Lehrman at Arizona State University. There he developed his skills by composing for modern dance performances and accompanying ballet and modern dance classes on piano, guitar, and percussion at ASU for 10 years.
Some of his recordings and compositions for dance have been performed at the Joyce Theater, New York Univesity, Times Square, and at the Bram Stoker International Film Festival. Live Performance credits also include Phoenix Symphony Hall, LUsine (Geneva), Museo del Barrio (NYC), Teatro Alameda (Seville), and Woodstock as well as many other international venues. His music can also be heard in the Sony Pictures release Universal Soldier III: Regeneration, available on DVD and on Netflix.
Kristofer has spent 15 years in the field of education working in many capacities: Conducting music workshops with at risk children in group homes, after school programs, and detention centers throughout Arizona with Free Arts AZ and Ear Candy Charity; teaching guitar and music classes at Notre Dame Preparatory High School, Scottsdale Community College, and Metro Arts High School, as well as working with developmentally disabled and autistic children.
OLIVIA ROJAS (FLAMENCO SINGER, PHOENIX AZ)
Olivia Rojas began her professional career singing choral and Mexican rancheras. She began singing flamenco in 2004 and has toured throughout the United States with Calo Flamenco: Ballet de Martin Gaxiola and Chris Burton Jacome Flamenco Ensemble. She had the honor of performing at the prestigious Tablao Flamenco Albuquerque pre-shows during the Albuquerque Flamenco Festival in 2016. She has performed with Alma Performing Arts, Carlos Montufar - World Dance, Mosaico, Yumi La Rosa Ensemble and Flamenco del Pueblo Viejo and Inspiracion Flamenca. She is Co-Owner of Flamenco Por La Vida along with Angelina Ramirez and performs in various venues throughout Arizona and teaches flamenco singing.
ROSS FELLRATH (FLAMENCO GUITARIST)
Ross Fellrath is a lifelong musician with a passion and curiosity for music that has taken him around the country and world. Flamenco seemed like a good challenge. He has studied Flamenco in Madrid, Spain with El Entri, Jesus de Rosario and Killino Jimenez. In Sevilla, he studied with Javier Heredia and Mark Brown. He has also learned a lot from (and had a lot of fun at) the late night fiestas in Sevilla. He is a guitarist for Zorongo Flamenco and teacher Sachiko Nishiuchi. Ross is grateful for all the international and local talent the Minneapolis Flamenco community has to offer. He thinks the biggest reward of being a musician is all the interesting people he meets so make sure you say hello.
