SLOSLYLOVE

When I met Feng Meng Vue, he mentioned that he had never found a real electronic music scene in Eau Claire. Its possible thats all about to change. Vue  who releases music as sloslylove  just put out Tendencies, a ten-track tape and digital album that carries a level of polish that is nearly unmatched among local, short-run releases.

Tendencies moves deftly between modern production and throwbacks to the glamorous 80s, with heavy synth lines, shimmering transitions and Phil Collins-esque drum fills, and mostly maintaining a steady, danceable pace. But sloslylove is just as good in his more ambient, emotional moments, such as album closer *summer is forever. Voice samples from old TV shows or audio books are peppered throughout the record, adding a cinematic feel to the tracks. Vue began making music  not counting earlier attempts at piano lessons  in 2005 in his senior year at Memorial High School. At the time I started, I would make really bad melodies and resample them and slice them up to recreate new ideas and melodies, Vue said. From there I started sampling found sounds from other sources.

Since then, sloslylove has put out a variety of digital releases (many of which are still available for free download) leading up to Tendencies, which is digital and on cassette tape. I put it on tape because I wanted to see if I could do it, Veng said. The designing, beat making, printing, folding, ordering blank cassettes, dubbing, all that stuff. Its definitely not easy doing it all yourself. And that design is another perk for Tendencies. The casing of the tape and the tape itself  are beautifully orchestrated and match the jovial music inside. Besides sloslylove, Vue also plays in a new Minneapolis based project, Vandaam. Its a different sound from my current project, but it still holds many of the same elements I use. Currently, sloslylove isnt active as a live project, but Vue says there could be shows in the near future. As for recording, Vue will keep busy. [Volume One]

TUFAWON

On his latest project The Send-Off, rapper and producer Tufawon stays connected to his Southside Minneapolis roots, while simultaneously expanding his horizons and broadening his influences. A quick project that packs a lot of ideas about politics, culture, social awareness, and self-care over a range of spaced-out beats and varying rhythms, Tufawons sound has grown beyond his local scene to include inspiration from his experiences traveling the world.

Growing up in poverty without the privilege to move outside his immediate community, the importance of worldly influence and global understanding wasn't instilled early on, but an eye-opening series of trips to Cuba with the US Cuba Artist Exchange of the Twin Cities enlightened his perspective and broadened his creativity. Working with Cuban rappers, producers, and instrumentalists brought a new insight to the Minneapolis veteran's art and hustle, and he's been itching to continue to explore the world and push the work even further. The proceeds of The Send-Off were put towards future travel opportunities, which included a recent trip to Colombia.

You can hear the positive effect of his new opportunities in the lyrics themselves, which contain a number of ruminations on the world, the self, and ones place in the universe. With years of experience putting out projects with Minneapolis mainstays Freez and Franz Diego as Illuminous 3, he's made a name for himself already, and established a signature sound of smoked-out grit and savvy bars. But the artists journey is evident in his new approach to rap music, which includes both adaptations of his increasing sonic palette, and a glimpse into his personal progression as an artist, a world citizen, and a human being.
