'17 The Creation, by F.J. Haydn (Basically Baroque Concert Series)
Vesper Chorale and Vesper Chamber Orchestra present an encore performance of The Creation, by Franz Joseph Haydn. This piece is the most frequently performed oratorio in western culture, next to Handel's Messiah, and may well be Haydn's crowning achievement. Working with text allowed Haydn to be both inventive and humorous with tone painting using specific musical motives to represent the action or the topic of the text, such as flutes to represent birds, heavily accented descending lines to depict the plummet of demons into the abyss, or divided violas and cellos to describe whales. Haydn, masterful at having fun with his audience, brought to The Creation his most inventive melodic ideas, colorful harmonies, and new orchestration mixes. His descriptions of the heavy beasts and the crawling worm illustrate how happily, and at times comically, Haydn approached this task. Come and enjoy this glorious Creation with us. Preconcert lecture takes place 30 minutes before each concert.
