'17 Life, Death, and the In-Between (A Cappella Music for Lent)
Meditate on the changing moods of Lent as Vesper Chorale presents a cappella music in a variety of styles, both historic and contemporary. After starting with a secular utopian piece on poetry by Langston Hughes, the concert moves into sacred music with traditional Lenten themes. It traverses the ups and downs of Lenten reflection with Felix Mendelssohn's motet on the Martin Luther hymn "Mitten wir im Leben sind" (In the Very Midst of Life); Herbert Howells' "Requiem;" and short works by Pablo Casals and Dave Brubeck. The concluding piece, Randall Thompson's choral cycle "The Peaceable Kingdom" culminates in words of assurance from the prophet Isaiah: "Have ye not known? Have ye not heard?...Ye shall have a song...and gladness of heart." Journey from grief and trouble to comfort and hope through these healing songs. Conducted by Jeshua Franklin, Associate Artistic Director. Preconcert lecture takes place 30 minutes before each concert.
