Multi-instrumentalist and singer Hubby Jenkins of the Carolina Chocolate Drops got his musical education the old fashioned way: on the streets of NYC. Born and raised in Brooklyn, he followed a thread of African American music-making through country blues, ragtime, fiddle and banjo, and traditional jazz. He learned to capture the attention of an audience on sidewalks and subway platforms, performing material by venerable African American roots artists. Hubby observes, The blues represents the Black experience in a country that accepts and oppresses us simultaneously. It is a reminder of the deep flowing river that I am a part of and continue to flow within. It is the root and soul."
