American Songwriter
Michael Altman's, American Songwriter is a kaleidoscopic musical road trip down a million mile highway of poetry, philosophy and life featuring Nashville hit songwriter, Danny Darst. Altman's American Songwriter traverses the bedrock and backbone of Darst's gritty lay it on the line storytelling style as one of Americana's most talented song-smiths. From sea to shining sea, hundreds of songs and stories, sixty years of boot leather and worn out steering wheels, American Songwriter draws you into Darst's struggles growing up poor, how he discovered who he was and found redemption through the love of a good woman. Here is a fascinating portrait of an authentic American man.

The Screening will be followed by a Q&A with the film's director, Michael Altman who has been steeped in the mystique and machinations of legendary director Robert Altman since the day he was conceived. The eldest of Altman's sons among five siblings, he had his first success at age 14 writing the lyrics to "Suicide Is Painless," the much-loved theme song to the smash hit, M.A.S.H., directed by his dad.
Michael worked as an apprentice editor, assistant editor, technical supervisor and then as a post-production supervisor on such films as A Wedding, O.C. and Stiggs, Fool for Love, Kansas City and Dr. T & the Women, directed by his father. He then devised, built and operated unique location projection and post production equipment, which was used during the production of Steven Spielberg's Amistad and The Lost World, Frank Darabont's The Majestic, John McTiernan's The 13th Warrior, Andrew Davis' Collateral Damage and numerous additional films with Robert Altman. Among his credits are Herbie Fully Loaded, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, Gus Van Sant's Drugstore Cowboy as well as David Lynch's groundbreaking feature film, Twin Peaks.
In 1975, he opened a publishing company and wrote several books, Including The Moonshiners' Manual, under the pseudonym, Michael Barleycorn, and an unpublished biography of his father.
With his next venture, Not Long Productions, (with brother Bobby and actor Dick York) the company wrote, produced and directed nine original short films with music for then-fledgling cable companies such as HBO and Showtime. In Seattle, he founded Mobile Post, providing location editorial and post production services, and later merging with Seattle's famous Cutter's Way, a negative cutting and editorial facility. Among his other ventures was Altman Gessert Entertainment (AGE), a feature film development and production company in partnership with editor Phil Gessert.
From 2000-2003 he conspired with inventor Paul Darbee (developer of the Universal Remote) to launch Darbee Labs, LLC, marketing a revolutionary digital imaging technology which brought increased and stunning depth and enhanced texture to digital images for film. This process was used on a number of commercials and feature films including several of his father's films including the Academy Award winning masterpiece, Gosford Park, and the digitally filmed The Company.
Michael has worked with all of the major studios and many of the industry's finest filmmakers.
