Enjoy the amazing versatility of banjo as four master level players give us a dynamic night of Old-Time, Jazz, Folk, World Music and Bluegrass of every variety.
Host Bob Altschuler performs and records with Thirteen Feet of Bluegrass and Three Quarter North. His bluegrass stylings have been heard on NPR, radio and TV commercials and he is a favorite regional banjo instructor.
Inspired by Pete Seeger, Earl Scruggs and Bela Fleck, Hilary Kostanoski-Hawke picks her banjo in the thriving folk scene of Brooklyn, NY. She plays and writes with M Shanghai Stringband, Dubl Handi, the Me Oh My Ohs, and Hilary Hawke & the Flipsides. She was trained at Crane School of Music and Columbia University, and she currently teaches banjo at Jalopy Theatre and The New School.
Lorraine Lee Hammond is a tradition-bearer specializing in ballads. Tonight she'll be accompanied by her husband, ace guitarist Bennett Hammond. They are regarded as "folk music missionaries," introducing the folk music of America to audiences across the U.S. and British Isles. "Dazzling, witty, eclectic, delightful duo. These two are gentle masters of folk melody. " -Boston Globe
In addition to building banjos and teaching people how to play them, Massachusetts musician Glenn Nelson performs with the bands Wide Open Spaces and Acoustic Planet. His brand of bluegrass without borders will take you to Caribbean islands, California gold country, Celtic ceilidhs and the Kentucky hills.
