Del Rey is a superb entertainer--a hillbilly/smarty-pants/country blues musician with a sense of humor and a manic intensity. She's smart, funny and a true virtuoso of guitar and ukulele. Raised on the music of Sam Chatmon, Lydia Mendoza and Memphis Minnie, Del Rey's guitar playing embraces country blues, stride piano and classic jazz--all filtered through the mind of an autodidact trailor-park aesthete. Now hailed as "one of the greatest modern players of the metal-bodied resonator guitar" (Acoustic Guitar Magazine) she has also taken the humble ukulele to a new level of musicianship, picking out the same complicated, rhythmic blues and ragtime on four strings as she does on six.
