Katia Cardenas
Katia Cardenas is a jazz and R&B vocalist in the Twin Cities, recognized for her radiant energy, impeccable range, and dynamic and powerful voice. Releasing her debut EP, "I'll Be Seeing You" in June 2016, she has been performing locally since 2014 at respected venues, including Dakota Jazz Club, Crooners Lounge, Vieux Carré and Jazz Central Studios.
Making music in the Twin Cities has been a family tradition ever since her father, Mark Cardenas, joined Morris Day and The Time in 1983, appearing in Prince's iconic film "Purple Rain," and later playing in Jessie Johnson's Revue. Her mother, singer-songwriter Janis Kelly, also began her singing career here at that time. While her family left MN before she was born, Katia's emergence on the local music scene has not gone unnoticed. Deemed "one of the fastest rising stars on the Twin Cities jazz scene," Jazz Police also describes her as "a young but veteran vocalist who can cover Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday, yet is equally adept at modern folk/pop/blues," while Rhythm & Grooves (KFAI 90.6) says, "Katia Cardenas has the pipes to get over an R&B tune, but also has the instincts and subtlety to handle jazz standards."
As part of a musical family, she grew up in the Pacific Northwest, and was raised on a strict diet of jazz, funk, and R&B. As a teen, she moved to Sacramento, CA, where she received a Waldorf education, and began singing in jazz choirs and performing in clubs with her mother's funk band, The Groove Ambassadors. Katia came to the Twin Cities in 2006 to attend Macalester College, where she performed in a cappella groups and jazz combos. After graduating, music was just a side note for a few years as she pursued a career in acting and theater education. But in 2013, she realized the significant lack of music in her life, and needed to make a change.
Since her Twin Cities debut performance in February 2014, she has collaborated with numerous local musicians, exploring different musical styles, including jazz, latin, R&B, and pop. In October 2014, she performed her first of many shows at the world-renowned Dakota Jazz Club, and by July 2015, she was invited to sing as the featured artist for the grand opening of their new St. Paul venue, Vieux Carré (formerly The Artist Quarter). In August 2015, she also joined Casablanca Orchestra (CBO), the Midwest's premiere show band.
Katia is passionate about creating community around the arts and has engaged with numerous local artist networks including Jazz Central Studios, Twin Cities Cabaret Artists Network (TCCAN), Dakota Foundation for Jazz Education, and Minnesota Music Coalition. As an actor and arts administrator, she also works with local theater companies Teatro Del Pueblo, Pangea World Theater and TigerLion Arts. The people shes met through the Twin Cities arts and music community are a huge part of where she is today; they are a constant inspiration, and reminder to pursue her dreams.
Katia's debut EP features local musicians Andrew Foreman (bass), Ted Godbout (keys) and Zach Schmidt (drums), and was recorded at Ant Recording Studios, in cooperation with Essential Sessions Studios, and was mixed by Wondertone Productions.
JAZZONEANDO is a Latin jazz trio presenting original contemporary arrangements of Cuban son, Brazilian bossa nova, and American jazz standards and swing music, plus original compositions from a mature Latin jazz point of view. While the stage may be occupied by only three musicians, each plays a variety of instruments and all three sing vocal parts, producing a full, rich sound that is difficult to achieve with less than a full orchestra.
Individually and as an ensemble, the JAZZONEANDO members play gigs and concerts with luminaries Doc Severinsen (trumpet), Gabriel Hernández (piano Afro-Cuban All Stars), Gil Gutiérrez (guitar Doc Severinsen, world tours), Luis Gasca (trumpet Santana, Janis Joplin), Alfred Thompson (saxophone Irakere, Habana Ensemble), Doug Robinson (piano, composer), Richie Cole (saxophone Buddy Rich, Lionel Hampton, Doc Severinsen), Luques Curtis (bass Eddie Palmieri, Francisco Mela) Johnny Favourite (award-winning jazz singer, Sony recording artist), Julia Vari (international jazz singer and pianist) and others.
The ensemble was formed in 2010 and the trio has performed together since 2008.
ALBERTO YAMIL VÁZQUEZ (PIANO, DIRECTOR, ARRANGER):
Born into a musical family in the province of Villa Clara, Cuba, home of pianist Rubén González (Buena Vista Social Club), Yamil studied piano from a young age. After graduating from Centro de Superación Profesional y Artística in Villa Clara with a major in piano performance, he joined the elite band Somos Jóvenes (later known as Guillermo y Su Salsón Latino), touring Cuba and performing at Havanas famous Tropicana Club, and traveling to the Canary Islands for Carnavál, where he composed and arranged music and shared the stage with famed trumpeter, vocalist and composer Wilfrido Vargas, who brought merengue to the world, and Spains Orquesta Maracaibo. Yamil came to Mexico in 1996 to pursue his love of Latin Jazz and to further develop his repertoire as a composer and arranger. He is the pianist for the salsa band Cubania and is director, arranger and pianist for the trio JAZZONEANDO, organized in 2010. He lives with his wife and two of three children in Querétaro, Mexico; his eldest son, Dairon, is completing his studies as a musician in Cuba, majoring in Latin percussion.
AARÓN ROMO (BASS, VOCALS):
Aarón was born in Mexico City, where he taught himself acoustic and electric guitar, and later studied flamenco guitar and bass, earning a scholarship to the Bass Collective in Brooklyn, NY, and becoming fluent in English. He played in a succession of rock bands in Mexico, landing coveted house band contracts and event gigs. He fell in love with jazz music in New York and continued to develop his repertoire in Latin jazz and son cubano. In 1997 he moved to San Miguel de Allende and quickly gained a reputation for skill and versatility on bass, guitar, percussion and vocals across styles from rock, blues and funk to Latin jazz, son cubano and salsa. In addition to composing and arranging music, Aarón performs with internationally renowned musicians Gabriel Hernández, Gil Gutiérrez, Doug Robinson, Ken Bichel, Richie Cole, Bobby Kaplan, Rick Schlosser, Ken Basman, Luques Curtis and more. He has played at the Blue Room at Kansas Citys American Jazz Museum and has been invited to perform with Twin Cities Latin Jazz Orchestra, Café Accordion Orchestra, and Salsabrosa in Minnesota.
KIMANI CARRAZANA (PERCUSSION, VOCALS):
Born in Havana, Cuba, Kimani graduated from Escuela Superior de Música Félix Varela and joined Grupo Caribe Expreso, directed by his father, Ángel Carrazana Cuellar, for 10 years, touring Cuba, Spain, Argentina, France and Italy. In 2003 Kimani settled in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, where he established a reputation as a top conga and timbal player, band leader, and relentless promoter of all things Cuban. Kimani has performed with trumpet player Luis Gasca, pianist Gabriel Hernández, soprano singer Adriana Valdés, flutist Orlando Maraca Valle, guitarist/composer Gil Gutiérrez, trumpeter Doc Severinsen, drummer Dagoberto Quintana, percussionist Roberto Viscaino, and other notables. He leads the salsa band Cubania and tours with JAZZONEANDO, playing a wide array of Latin percussion instruments and improvising pregones in the Cuban music tradition. He directed the recording and production of the CD Jazzoneando released in 2015.
