Dona nobis pacem
Word over all, beautiful as the sky, Beautiful that war and all its deeds of carnage must in time be utterly lost. Walt Whitman
Ralph Vaughan Williams' Dona nobis pacem (Grant us peace) is one of the most important anti-war compositions of the 20th century. This masterful cantata for soloists, choir, and orchestra blends Biblical text with the emotionally charged poetry of Walt Whitman to create a searing indictment of the tragedy of war. Also on the program are Herbert Howells' Take him earth, for cherishing and Northwest composer John Muelheisen's Da Pacem, a commission by Seattle Pro Musica.
