Seeking dance deeply rooted in music and expressing our collective search for freedom and humanity, featuring Zorongo apprentices:
Amanda Dlouhy started studying flamenco with Susana di Palma in 2013. Her instincts come from a layered dance history, including early training in ballet, jazz, and tap. She danced with Ragamala Dance from 2005 - 2013 and received a McKnight Fellowship for Dancers in 2011.
Grace Holthaus began dancing when she was 5 years old because her sister started. But when her sister stopped, Grace kept going. At age 5 she started with ballet, tap and jazz at On Stage School of Dance. In college at the U of MN, Morris she fell in love learning cultural dances. Grace studies and performs with Zorongo in the Majas apprentice program and had the privilege of performing with Deborah Elias Danza Española in Las Flamenco. Originally from Tokyo, Japan, Eve Makiko Laabs discovered flamenco at Minnehaha Falls where she saw Zorongos 2008 production of Romeria. She loves flamenco for its depth, authenticity and strength that carries over to life beyond dance, through joy, sorrow and triumph.
Brenda Nepsund is an alumni from MSU, Mankato where she choreographed MSUs main stage production of Carmina Burana and performed in the Gala at Americas College Dance Festival (North Central, 2014) in War Story by Dr. Julie Kerr-Berry. After receiving her B.S. in Dance, Brenda has been intensively training as an apprentice since June 2014 and is grateful for the opportunity to work with everyone at Zorongo.
Felicia Stevens began dancing at age four with CAAM Chinese Dance Theater. Her first exposure to classical ballet, modern and jazz dance came a decade later when she enrolled at the St. Paul Conservatory for Performing Artists. In 2014 she received her BFA in Dance from the University of MN. Felicia joined Zorongo as a Majas apprentice in June of 2014 and has danced with the company in Flamenco on Fire (2015). Outside of Zorongo, Felicia teaches ballet, tap and yoga.
Molly Kay Stoltz graduated in 2009 with her UMN Dance BFA, and has since pursued rhythmic dance performance with Jump Rhythm Jazz, Chicago Tap Theater, and now with Zorongo since 2014. She is passionate about live music & dance collaborations in many forms, including with her band THE SUMMER COATS, as a tap & jazz dancer who performs with musicians regularly, and now as a student of Flamenco.
Ben Abrahamson:
Ben Abrahamson is an active guitarist and composer based in the Twin Cities. His passion for flamenco guitar drove him to Taller de Músics School of Music in Barcelona, Spain, where he studied under Juan Ramón Caro. He has composed extensively for live dance and theater and performed as guest artist at colleges throughout the metro and in Pennsylvania. Ben's pieces have been commissioned by the Minneapolis Guitar Quartet, Zorongo Flamenco Dance Theatre, and the Macalester College big band. He has shared the stage with mentors like Michael Hauser, Susana di Palma, La Conja, Pedro Cortes Jr., Joan Griffith, and Gary Lee Joyner. Ben also plays regularly with groups such as Lulu's Playground, the Tom Nordlund Quintet, A Touch of Spain, and the Ben Abrahamson Trio.
Michael Hauser:
Michael Hauser is one of a handful of flamenco guitar masters residing in the United States today. Mr. Hauser has traveled to Spain where he began his lifelong love affair with the intrinsically Spanish folk art flamenco. The son of two well-known artists, Michael Hauser has studied with a number of Spains great flamenco guitarists including Luis Maravilla, Niño Ricardo, Justo de Badajoz, and Juan Maya Marote. He has also studied classical guitar with Andrés Segovias classical guitar protégé Jesus Silva. Michael Hauser has performed in Europe and the Far East. He has completed numerous college and community tours as a soloist, as part of the Hauser Guitar Duo (with his brother Tony, an accomplished classical guitarist), and as first guitarist with a number of Spanish dance companies. He is one of the founders of the well-known flamenco dance company, ZORONGO FLAMENCO(www.Zorongo.org), and served as musical director and first guitarist for several years. Michael Hauser is sometimes referred to as The Father of Flamenco in the Midwest.Mr. Hauser is also currently on the music faculty at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, USA. He teaches flamenco guitar. Course Description: Study of techniques involved in picado, arpeggio, tremolo, and rasqueado. Intensive study of various rhythms and styles including Sevillanas, Soleares, Alegrias, Siguiryas, Tango, Bulerias, Tiento, etc. Introduction to basic flamenco dance and song accompaniment. Includes discussion of the Gypsy and Moor influence on the history of the art form.
