Over the past 8 months a little magic has been brewing inside an apartment in Clinton Hill. Each month, a group of women and their allies gather to share and discuss their work at a Ladies' Text-Based Salon. The Ladies Text-Based Salon strives to support the work of a diverse spectrum of writers, especially the work of queer writers and women of color. Our June salon showcased the work of Cathy Park Hong, Cate Marvin, Camille Rankine, Legacy Russell, Caitie Moore + music by Julie Kantor. Past salons have seen work by Jess Barbagallo (theater/poetry), Jon Baker (grafitti), Josh Bell (poetry), Lee Ann Brown (poetry), Elizabeth Clark - (poetry), Iris Cushing (poetry), Elizabeth Devlin (autoharp), Jennifer Fink (fiction), Matthew Fischer (painting), Tyehimba Jess (poetry), Casey Llewellyn (theater), Meghan Milam (dance/film), Arielle Narva (poetry/translation), Idra Novey (poetry), Iviva Olenik (embroidery), Lalo Pavez (poetry), Maria Stabio (painting), and Stephanie Ann Whited (poetry).
Inspired, in part, by the high-quality and internationally-minded work of this group of artists, we are excited to announce our plan to host a literary festival at beach hotel and restaurant Yemanja Caribe in Bocas del Toro, Panama. The festival will be a multi-lingual weekend of readings, film and music and will maintain our commitment to supporting text-based work by women, queer artists and writers of color.
Vale La Pena on July 1st will officially launch our collaboration with Yemanja. With ticket sales, we will raise $700 to purchase a video projector to continue hosting innovate film artists via the Ladies Text-based Salon.
There are many ways you can be involved in our work through your art, resources, and spirit. Let's talk about them on July 1st. Your presence is desired, is essential!
