AC/DC is more than a catchy name for a rock band. It's also emblematic of a debate that has existed since humans first began harnessing electricity to power our lives. The U.S. electrical grid runs on Alternating Current (AC) - but it didn't have to be that way. If history had gone just a bit differently, our grid might be powered by Direct Current, or DC, electricity. Just because AC is widely used, doesn't mean DC isn't a viable option. For example, DC is already present in countless technologies these days - anything that has a microchip runs on internal DC power, for instance - but that DC current is converted to AC in order to be compatible with our grid. Those DC-to-AC conversions are happening all the time, multiple times a day, in millions of electrical technologies - and those conversions waste energy in the process. That's just one of the reasons that energy efficiency innovators are looking "back to the future," exploring DC as an energy-efficient alternative to AC. Here at The Alliance Center we're exploring DC in a big way, with a cutting-edge Direct Current Microgrid conversion in our building - the first of its kind. Our April Sustainability Series will spotlight key AC/DC issues, explore exciting innovations and share the experience of The Alliance Center DC Microgrid conversion.
