AIARE June Membership Lunch Program
Demystify Cool Roofs for Energy Savings and Code Compliance on Your Next Project A Conversation with Jessica Clark
Lunch compliments of AlCal Specialty Products for AIA Members!
Cool roofs are a simple, elegant solution to decrease cooling loads, increase occupant comfort, and address climate change. This passive cooling strategy can save up to 30% of a building's cooling energy and is widely available for all building types. Yet while cool roofing can provide many benefits, the terminology and varied, complex code language can make it difficult to implement effectively. With this presentation, the CRRC aims to demystify cool roofing concepts. Attendees will learn to gauge how "cool" a product is and how to estimate and maximize energy savings potential; all while meeting code requirements and taking advantage of cool roof incentive programs. The presentation will also give an update on emerging technologies and industry trends. At the end of the program, attendees will be able to apply the knowledge and skills they've learned to their current and future projects.
Learning Objectives 1.Understand the core concepts and terminology of cool roofing technologies. 2.Learn about cool roofing metrics and free online tools for calculating cost-effectiveness. 3.Master the nuances of building code and incentive program requirements, such as Title 24, CalGreen, and LEED. 4.Understand how cool roof products are evolving and what types of products are in the pipeline. Jessica Clark's Bio: Jessica Clark is the Marketing Liaison for the Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC), an independent, educational non-profit organization that maintains a third-party rating system for radiative properties of roof surfacing materials. She has spoken on behalf of the CRRC at cool roof training workshops, has written several articles on cool roofing for industry publications such as Environmental Design + Construction, and has contributed to the AIA Continuing Education course Cool Roofs for Hot Projects in Architectural Record. Ms. Clark also aided in the development of the CRRC's ENERGY STAR certification body program for roof products. As a Project Manager at the energy efficiency consulting firm Energy Solutions in Oakland, CA, she has contributed to the implementation of several energy-efficiency projects, including the development of an online home energy guide for homeowners. She received a B.A. in Architecture from UC Berkeley.
