Classical mandolin virtuoso, Carlo Aonzo, has traveled all the way from Savona, Italy to give us one of his ferocious and stunning performances tonight. With fingers flying up, down and around the mandolin, he leaps from a bluegrass medley to a Vivaldi with Latin undercurrent. An international touring sensation, Carlo's list of accomplishments and contributions to the world of classical mandolin is endless. He has been the mando champ at Walnut Valley Festival, International Mandolin Festival in Varazze, Italy, and founded the International Mandolin Academy in 2006.
Tonight he'll be accompanied by Cuban classical guitarist Rene Izquierdo. Whether he's accompanying a vocalist, performing in a duet, leading an entire symphony, or playing solo, Izquierdo displays "sublime musicianship" and an "absolute command of the instrument" (Classical Guitar Magazine).
Opener Steve Bernstein studied mandolin with Carlo and served in his Mandolin Orchestra. A versatile player of classical, bluegrass and jazz mandolin, Steve will be accompanied by his brother, guitarist Mark Bernstein.
